Threshold
Physical Theatre / Projection Design / 2026.4

About
Threshold is a physical theatre work that reimagines Du Liniang, one of the most iconic figures in classical Chinese literature, through a contemporary exploration of divided identity.
The performance moves between two coexisting selves: a “real self” shaped by social order and control, and a “dream self” driven by repressed desire and instinct. Through bodily resistance, distortion, and gradual entanglement, the work explores how these two selves coexist, conflict, and eventually transform into a new state of being.
Projection Design
I was responsible for the projection design across Acts II–IV.
Using TouchDesigner, I created real-time audio-reactive visuals and changing digital environments that responded to the rhythm and emotional development of the performance.
I also used Kinect motion tracking to capture the performers’ movements and translate them into generative ink-wash imagery. These visuals were projected across both the stage screens and floor, allowing the performers’ gestures to extend into shifting traces of digital ink.
Rather than functioning as a static backdrop, the projection became an active part of the performance, connecting sound, body, movement, and space through a continuously changing visual environment.
Presentation
Threshold was first presented as a Central Saint Martins graduation project at Platform Theatre, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, on 23 April 2026.
The production was later presented at The Courtyard Theatre as part of Camden Fringe 2026, bringing the work into a wider public performance context.
