Generative Digital Artwork, 2024.10

Monet

Background

This project grew from my interest in Impressionism and its focus on fleeting perception. Rather than reproducing detail precisely, Impressionist painting captures a moment through colour, light, and brushwork. I began to ask whether this sense of a passing moment could also be reconstructed through code.

Research

The project was influenced by Vera Molnár’s Hommage à Monet series. Molnár reinterpreted the fluidity of Monet’s Water Lilies through geometric forms, computational rules, and randomness, using the tension between structure and chance to translate Impressionist qualities into generative imagery.

Design

I extracted key colours from Monet and other Impressionist paintings and reduced painterly gestures into shifting blocks of colour. Through loops and random movement, these blocks subtly flicker and move, suggesting reflections on water, changing light, or plants moving in the wind.

Rather than reproducing the original paintings, the work uses generative code to reactivate their sense of light, colour, and movement, giving static images a renewed sense of temporality.
