The Face Within the Face

About

The Face Within the Face is an experimental performance bringing together Sichuan Opera face-changing and the Vakhtangov acting approach.

The work reinterprets traditional facial patterns not simply as fixed signs of character, but as visible layers of psychological experience. Each act of covering, revealing, or changing the face becomes a form of inner transformation, allowing the mask to move between costume, image, object, and “living sculpture.”

Through this process, the performance explores how a traditional theatrical language can be translated into a contemporary form of psychological and visual expression.

Digital Interaction & Documentation

I worked across the production’s digital interaction, photography, and videography, contributing to both the live performance and its visual documentation.

Using TouchDesigner, creative coding, and UI-based interaction, I supported the digital and interactive elements of the work, exploring how the visual language of face-changing could extend beyond the performer’s body into digital media and audience interaction.

I also photographed and filmed the production, documenting its movement, masks, costumes, and audience encounters.
