Audience Behaviour, Digital Feedback and Immersive Performance Space

Research Development · Practice-Based Research · 2026

About

This research examines how audience agency gradually emerges within responsive performance environments, rather than assuming that interaction automatically creates meaningful participation.

The proposed practice takes place in a railway waiting room. Participants enter with only one instruction:

“Please Wait for Your Train.”

Waiting becomes the initial condition from which movement, stillness, voice, choice, and boundary-testing may gradually develop into participatory behaviour.

Research Question

How can waiting shift from a passive and controlled condition into a process through which audiences discover, test, and adjust their own agency?

The study also asks how real-time digital feedback allows participants to recognise relationships between their actions and the environment, and whether this recognition alters what they do next.

Research Focus

The project connects participatory performance, audience agency, digital scenography, and waiting.

Rather than defining agency as simply being able to trigger an effect, I examine it through three linked processes:

  • Feedback Recognition Can participants recognise that the system is responding to them?
  • Behavioural Adjustment Do they repeat, modify, or test their actions after receiving feedback?
  • Awareness of System Limits Do they recognise that their apparent freedom is still structured by spatial rules, programmed responses, and predetermined boundaries?

Research Approach

The proposed study combines practice-based research with qualitative audience research.

A workshop moves from individual participation to small-group and collective interaction. Observation, movement records, participant reflection, and interviews are used to compare what participants actually do with how they later interpret their own choices.

Key Proposition

Audience agency is not simply given by an interactive system; it is gradually recognised, negotiated, tested, and limited through feedback.
